APHRODITE's CHILD - it's five o clock... Nostalgia

VANGELIS & DEMIS

The “story behind” it is interesting because the song sounds cheerful and melodic, but underneath it carries a feeling of loneliness, distance, and emotional exhaustion.
The lyrics describe someone awake at five in the morning, unable to sleep, thinking about a lost love. The city is quiet, dawn is coming, and there’s a feeling of emptiness and reflection. The repeated line “It’s five o’clock and I walk through the empty streets” creates that atmosphere of isolation.
What gives the song extra depth is the situation of the band itself at the time:
The group members were Greeks living abroad in Europe during a difficult political era in Greece.
They often felt like outsiders and were struggling financially and emotionally during their early years in Paris.
Many fans believe that sense of homesickness and emotional displacement quietly entered their music, including this song.
The main singer was Demis Roussos, whose emotional voice became the signature of the track. The keyboard player and composer was the legendary Vangelis, later famous for movie scores like Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire.
Musically, the song mixes:
soft rock,
Mediterranean melody,
orchestral atmosphere,
and melancholic late-night emotion.
That combination is probably why it still feels timeless today...
